Understanding Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight in Air Freight
In air freight, what you’re charged isn’t always based on what your cargo weighs.
What Is Actual Weight?
Actual (gross) weight is the physical weight of the cargo. It includes:
Measured in kilograms — this is the weight you would normally expect to pay for.
What Is Chargeable Weight?
Air freight pricing is based on chargeable weight, which considers both:
- Actual weight
- Volumetric (dimensional) weight
The airline charges whichever is higher.

What Is Volumetric Weight?
Large but lightweight cargo takes up valuable aircraft space.
Volumetric weight is calculated using:
(Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Divisor
(commonly 5,000 for air, or 6,000 for other modes)
This converts space into a «weight equivalent.»
Why This Matters
Understanding chargeable weight helps:
- Avoid unexpected costs
- Optimize packaging
- Plan shipments more efficiently
Smaller packaging = lower volume = potentially lower cost.
